E/R: One week old baby recovered from toilet pit

Suhum Fire Officers Retrieve Body of Baby Dumped in Toilet Pit

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Suhum have recovered the body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit in Ali, a suburb of Suhum.

In a statement from the Eastern Regional Public Relations Office of the GNFS, the incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, near Gateway Preparatory School.

The Suhum Municipal Fire Station received a distress call around 6:30 a.m. and quickly dispatched an 11-member rescue team led by ASTNO Danso Henry. The officers arrived at 6:44 a.m. and began a delicate retrieval exercise. By 7:00 a.m., they had brought the baby out of the pit, but he was already dead.

Initial findings suggest the case may be an act of infanticide, allegedly carried out by the child’s mother, who is reported to have fled. The remains have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

The GNFS praised its officers for their courage and professionalism in managing such a distressing incident, noting their swift and coordinated efforts.

Authorities are appealing to the public to share any information that could help locate the baby’s mother and support ongoing investigations.
